It is not the area. It is the pattern repeat
Almost every wallpaper calculator asks for the size of the room, works out an area, divides by the area of a roll and gives you a number. That answer is wrong for any paper with a pattern, and it is wrong in the direction that leaves you short on the last wall.
Here is why. Every drop has to start at the same point in the pattern as the one beside it, or the seam does not line up. So a drop cannot be cut to the height of the wall. It has to be cut to a whole number of repeats, and everything past the wall height is offcut.
Worked on a 2.4 metre wall with a 100mm trim allowance, against a standard 10.05 metre roll:
- Plain, no repeat: drop 2.5m, four drops a roll, 0.05m wasted
- 320mm repeat: drop 2.56m, three drops a roll, 2.37m wasted
Three instead of four is a third more rolls, on the same wall, covering the same area, decided by a number printed on the label that most calculators never ask for. On a decent paper that is real money, and it is money you find out about at the till rather than when you are choosing.
Note also that the penalty is not smooth. A 640mm repeat and a 320mm repeat both round a 2.5 metre drop up to 2.56 metres, so on that particular wall they cost exactly the same. Change the ceiling height by a few centimetres and they stop being equal. That is precisely why guessing does not work and why the arithmetic has to be done with your actual numbers.
An offset match costs half a repeat again
On an offset or half-drop match, each drop hangs half a repeat lower than the one next to it. So alternate drops need an extra half repeat of length on top of everything above.
There is a way round most of it, and it is what the trade does: cut alternate drops from two rolls, so the offcut from the first roll becomes the start of the next drop on the second. Work drop by drop off a single roll and you pay the full penalty every time.
Do not deduct the doors and windows
This feels wasteful, and it is why plenty of people finish a roll short.
A door still needs a full drop each side. It usually needs a short piece over it too, and that short piece has to be cut from a full drop to keep the pattern running, so it does not save you anything. Papering straight past a window and cutting the opening out afterwards is standard practice, and the piece you cut out is the wrong shape for anywhere else.
So this tool counts full-width drops all the way round the room and deducts nothing. If you have a wall that is almost entirely patio door, take that width off the perimeter yourself, because that is the one case where the deduction is real.
Buy the spare with the rest, not afterwards
Every roll carries a batch number, and the shade varies between batches by enough to see on a wall in daylight, particularly on a plain or a subtle pattern. Two batches next to each other look like a fault in the paper.
So going back for one more roll in three weeks is a gamble, and in five years when you need to patch a damaged drop it is not even a gamble, because the paper will be discontinued. Buy the spare now, and check every roll is the same batch before you start rather than when you reach the fourth one.
Measure the height at both ends of every wall
The answer here changes in whole drops rather than smoothly, which makes it unusually sensitive to a sloppy measurement. If your ceiling height puts you just inside four drops a roll, two centimetres more takes you to three and adds several rolls to the job.
Ceilings are rarely level and floors are worse. A 30mm fall across a room eats the whole trim allowance at one end. Measure at both ends of every wall, work to the tallest point, and trim the rest: it is easier to cut a bit off than to explain a gap at the skirting.
What the waste figure means, and why it is not a mistake
The tool shows how much more paper you are buying than actually ends up on the wall. On a patterned paper that number is often uncomfortable, and it is not a sign anything has gone wrong.
It is the unavoidable consequence of two fixed numbers, the repeat and the roll length, meeting a third one, your ceiling height. Nobody can make it smaller by being clever with the hanging. What you can do is know it before you choose the paper, because a different repeat on a similar-looking design can be a genuinely cheaper room.
